Pets of Older Persons (POOPs)

Pets of Older Persons (POOPs) program was established at St. Joseph’s Hospital Auburn in partnership with the RSPCA NSW to assist the elderly in the community to care for their pets.
Services Provided:
- Monitoring of pets by POOPs staff
- Support in caring for pets
- Treatment by RSPCA vets when required
- Foster accommodation/emergency boarding of the pet should the owner require hospitalisation.
- Monthly grooming.
Eligibility for POOPs services:
- Any elderly person owning a pet who does not have relatives or friends willing to take responsibility for the pet.
- Fostering of pets is also available for elderly hospital inpatients.
- All POOPs services are available to Palliative Care patients of any age who do not have the social supports to care for their pets.
Costs involved:
The POOPs program operates on donations and money from fundraising.
Owners are asked to pay a nominal amount according to their means for veterinary attention / boarding / grooming. POOPs then assists with the rest of the accounts.
