Anthrozoology Research Group (ARG)

The Anthrozoology Research Group (ARG) is affiliated with the Animal Welfare Science Centre and the Department of Psychology at Monash University.

It grew out of a personal interest in companion animal welfare and the potential involvement of pet animals in maintaining human psychological health. The group is now much broader, with several very enthusiastic post graduate and graduate students conducting research into numerous aspects of the human-companion animal relationship.

Our recent projects have included the construction of scales, questionnaires and tests to measure things like human-animal bonding, satisfaction with dog training, dog personality, post-traumatic stress following companion animal euthanasia and dog attachment. We have also examined the types of dog training available in the community, the effects of how dogs look on their ability to communicate with each other, the rehabilitation of shelter dogs and the effectiveness of a program designed to teach dog safety to preschool children.

There are many more things we would like to investigate, so postgraduate and fourth year projects are available in a wide range of topics.
