Animal Welfare Science Centre (AWSC)

The Animal Welfare Science Centre (AWSC) is a joint centre of the University of Melbourne, Monash University and the Department of Primary Industries (DPI).
The Animal Welfare Science Centre’s mission is to improve the welfare of all animals in Australia including companion animals, farm and laboratory animals. The Centre’s main objective is to improve animal welfare by increasing our understanding of human-animal interactions. The Centre does this via research, training, teaching and public education programs.
The Centre’s research initiatives aim to demonstrate sustainable animal welfare practices and further characterise the human-animal relationship.
Animal welfare training and programs are provided to animal handlers and owners and through an undergraduate subject and post-graduate courses on animal welfare.
The general public are also able to request advice on recommended animal welfare practices. This advice is also provided through scientific and popular press, conferences and workshops.
